Paddle Steamer WaverleyThe last sea-going paddle steamer in the world....
Waverley is powered by a triple expansion reciprocating steam engine with steam pressure supplied by an
oil fired boiler. The engine turns a single shaft with the two paddle wheels attached - one each on port and
starboard sides. The two paddle wheels turn together - and cannot be turned in opposite directions. To turn
the paddles against each other would make the ship unstable and liable to capsize.
