The Swordsman, Stamford Bridge Stamford Bridge: 'The Swordsman' (pub sign) commemorates the action of a Viking 'berserker' defending the bridge over the river. English soldiers crept underdeath and dislodged the Viking using spears thrust up through the bridge decking.....

The Battle of Stamford Bridge (1066) rates as one of the most impressive military actions in England. Harold marched north to defeat the Norwegian and Viking army led by his brother Tostig. Immediately after roundly defeating the Vikings, Harold marched south to meet Duke William of Normandy at Hastings.......
